Module 1.2: Identifying Root Causes vs. Symptoms

Introduction

Understanding the difference between root causes and symptoms is essential for lasting transformation. Often, we spend time addressing surface-level issues (symptoms) without exploring the deeper factors driving them (root causes). In this module, we’ll dig beneath the surface to uncover the true sources of your struggles, setting the foundation for meaningful and lasting change.

What Are Symptoms?

Symptoms are the outward expressions of deeper issues. They are the challenges or behaviours you notice and experience daily, such as:

  • Stress, anxiety, or overwhelm.
  • Procrastination or lack of motivation.
  • Difficulty maintaining relationships or setting boundaries.
  • Negative thought patterns or emotional outbursts.

Symptoms are like the leaves of a tree—they’re visible, but they stem from something deeper.

What Are Root Causes?

Root causes are the underlying factors or experiences that create the symptoms you see. These may include:

  • Past traumas or unresolved emotional wounds.
  • Limiting beliefs shaped by childhood or societal conditioning.
  • Fear of failure, rejection, or abandonment.
  • Unconscious habits or coping mechanisms developed over time.

Root causes are like the roots of a tree—hidden beneath the surface but critical to understanding and addressing the whole picture.

Why Addressing Symptoms Alone Doesn’t Work

Focusing solely on symptoms may provide temporary relief, but it doesn’t resolve the issue. For example:

  • Treating anxiety with distraction techniques may help in the moment but won’t uncover what’s causing the anxiety.
  • Avoiding conflict in relationships might prevent immediate discomfort but won’t resolve deeper communication or self-worth issues.

When we ignore root causes, symptoms often resurface in different forms, keeping us stuck in a cycle of frustration and dissatisfaction.

How to Identify Root Causes

Uncovering root causes requires introspection and honesty. Here are some steps:

  1. Ask "Why?" Repeatedly:For every symptom, ask yourself, "Why am I feeling or acting this way?" Then ask again for each subsequent answer until you uncover a deeper truth.
  2. Recognise Patterns:
Look for recurring themes in your thoughts, behaviours, and relationships. What patterns seem to repeat?
  3. Explore Your Past:
Reflect on past experiences or messages that may have shaped your beliefs or emotional responses.
  4. Tune Into Your Emotions:
Notice where you feel tension or resistance in your body and mind. Emotions often point to unresolved issues.

Activity: The "Why Ladder"

Take one current challenge or symptom in your life and climb the "Why Ladder."

  1. Write the symptom at the top.
  2. Ask, "Why is this happening?" Write your answer beneath.
  3. For that answer, ask, "Why?" again. Repeat this process until you reach the root cause.

Example:

  • Symptom: I procrastinate at work.
  • Why? Because I feel overwhelmed.
  • Why? Because I’m afraid of making mistakes.
  • Why? Because I believe mistakes mean I’m not good enough.

Root Cause: Fear of failure tied to a belief about self-worth.

Reflection Questions

  • What patterns or beliefs keep showing up in your life?
  • What emotions do you tend to suppress or avoid, and why?
  • What would change if you addressed the root cause of your challenges?

Meditation: Digging Deep

This week’s guided meditation will help you visualize digging beneath the surface to uncover hidden root causes. Picture your challenges as a tree, and imagine traveling down to its roots, gently exploring what lies beneath.
